Finding the ideal sound world for Schubert’s quartets is by no means easy, yet the Alinde strikes a near-ideal balance between internal clarity and textural warmth, shone through by sparkling intonation.

Julian Haylock, the Strad

Interpretatively it is very much the same story – the players shape Schubert’s unashamedly Mozartian phrases with disarming naturalness and affection, yet retain a buoyant, crisply articulated classicism without a hint of self-conscious HIP. Gentler on the ear than the Melos (DG), more intimate in scale than the Leipzig (MDG), sweeter-toned than the Kodály (Naxos) and utterly captivating in the hurtling emotional changeability of the Quartettsatz, this marks a most auspicious start to their complete cycle.

Alinde Quartett 2024|2025

In the Philharmonic “Portrait” series dedicated to the Alinde Quartet, the four artists present six concerts that showcase a wide variety of facets, from baroque music on historical instruments to brand new commissioned compositions. One focus is the music of Schubert, whose string quartets they are currently recording in a highly acclaimed project.
They also perform a children's concert with trips to sunny Italy, a work by Wolfgang Rihm together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen conducted by Duncan Ward and combine with the formidable organ playing of Iveta Apkalna.

Within a few minutes, the musicians succeed again and again in creating a whole palette of evocations and emotions – and seemingly with ease. The Schubert of the Alinde Quartet radiates an extraordinary naturalness, authenticity – as if this music could not be played any other way.
